Barcelona has 14 public holidays in 2027: 12 for all of Catalonia, set by the Generalitat's order EMT/52/2026 (DOGC, 1 April 2026), plus 2 local days set by the Ajuntament, Whit Monday (17 May) and La Mercè (Friday 24 September).

Three of them fall on a Saturday (1 May, the Diada on 11 September and Christmas Day), so a Monday to Friday worker gets 11 weekdays off. The no-leave long weekends are 1 January, Easter (26 to 29 March, four days), 17 May, 24 September, 1 November and the 4 to 6 December weekend.

Every date below is confirmed in an official source. Sant Esteve (26 December) falls on a Sunday in 2027 and is not on the list.

Barcelona public holidays 2027: the full list

This is every paid public holiday for people who work in the city of Barcelona in 2027. The 12 Catalan and national days come from the Generalitat's order EMT/52/2026 of 25 March, published in DOGC no. 9637 on 1 April 2026. The two local days are set by the Ajuntament de Barcelona and listed on its official holidays calendar. Weekdays were calculated, not copied.

Not holidays in 2027: Holy Thursday is a working day in Catalonia. Sant Esteve (26 December), normally a Catalan holiday, falls on a Sunday in 2027 and is not on the 2027 list. The Assumption (15 August) also falls on a Sunday and is not moved. Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve are ordinary working days. In the Val d'Aran, Easter Monday is replaced by the Festa d'Aran on 17 June; that does not affect Barcelona.

Long weekends and ponts in Barcelona in 2027

Barcelona loses three holidays to Saturdays in 2027, but Easter, Whit Monday and La Mercè all make clean long weekends. Here is every holiday that falls on a working day, and what it does to your week. (A pont is the Catalan word for what the rest of Spain calls a puente: the working day you take off to bridge a holiday and a weekend.)

Every holiday on a working day, and what it gives you

The best-value stretches of leave

These are calculated for someone who works Monday to Friday and gets every holiday on this page off. Check your own contract and collective agreement before you book anything.

Holidays that fall on a weekend in 2027

Three Catalan holidays fall on a Saturday in 2027. Catalonia's order does not move them, so if you work Monday to Friday you do not get a replacement day:

On top of those, the Assumption (Sunday 15 August) and Sant Esteve (Sunday 26 December) both fall on a Sunday and do not appear on the 2027 list. That is why Catalonia still reaches 12 regional and national days, but fewer of them are weekdays than usual. If you work Saturdays, the three Saturday holidays are still days off for you.

Barcelona's local holidays in 2027

The Ajuntament de Barcelona has set its two local holidays for 2027, and they appear on its official holidays calendar (calendari de festius):

The Generalitat also publishes every municipality's local holidays together in the DOGC; the dates above are the ones the city set.

Working outside the city? L'Hospitalet, Badalona, Sant Cugat and every other town in the metropolitan area choose their own two local days, and they often differ from Barcelona's. Your local holidays are those of the town where you work.

What about school holidays?

Schools close on every public holiday on this page, but term dates, the Easter and Christmas breaks and any extra non-teaching days are set separately by the Generalitat's Departament d'Educació, and individual schools can add a few days of their own. Do not plan childcare from the public holiday list alone: use your school's own calendar for the 2026-27 and 2027-28 term dates.

What is open and closed on a public holiday in Barcelona?

A public holiday in Barcelona runs much like a Sunday. Exact opening hours vary by business, so treat this as a guide and check the places that matter to you the day before.

How public holidays work for residents

How many holidays does a worker in Spain get?

Spanish labour law caps paid public holidays at 14 a year: up to 12 national and regional days, fixed each year in a decree by the regional government, plus 2 local days chosen by each town hall. All 14 are paid and you do not have to make the hours up. That is on top of your annual leave, which is at least 30 calendar days by law.

Local holidays follow where you work, not where you live

The two local days belong to the municipality where your workplace is. If you live in Barcelona but your office is in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, you get L'Hospitalet de Llobregat's local holidays, not Barcelona's. Schools and public offices follow the local holidays of the town they are in. This trips up a lot of newcomers who commute across a municipal boundary.

Sunday and Saturday holidays

Spain does not automatically move a holiday that lands on a weekend. Each regional government decides, in its yearly decree, whether to move a Sunday holiday to the Monday. A Saturday holiday is normally not moved, so Monday to Friday workers simply do not gain a day. If you do work Saturdays, as many people in shops and hospitality do, the Saturday holiday is a day off for you.

If you have to work on a holiday

Hospitals, transport, hotels, restaurants and many shops work through every holiday. If you are one of those workers, your collective agreement (convenio colectivo) sets the compensation, usually extra pay or a day off in lieu. Check your own agreement or ask your employer; it varies by sector.

Freelancers (autónomos)

If you are self-employed, nobody gives you the day off, but your clients, your gestoría, the tax office and the social security office will all be closed. Deadlines that land on a holiday generally move to the next working day for official procedures, but do not count on that for private contracts.

Planning tips for residents

Sant Joan is a night, then a day

The holiday is Thursday 24 June, but the party is the revetlla on the night of the 23rd: fireworks, bonfires and coca until late, especially on the beaches. Many people take Friday the 25th off to recover and make it a four-day weekend.

La Mercè on a Friday means a busy city weekend

With 24 September on a Friday, the Mercè concerts, correfocs and castells cluster into one long weekend. If you live in the centre, expect crowds and late noise; if you want to see it, it is the easiest Mercè to enjoy in years.

The Diada and Christmas Day are lost on Saturdays

11 September and 25 December are both Saturdays in 2027, and Sant Esteve is a Sunday. Count your actual weekdays off (11) when planning annual leave, not the headline 14.

Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve are working days

Neither is a public holiday. Many offices close early, but your employer is not obliged to give you the day. In 2027 both are Fridays, so taking them as leave makes a long weekend.

FAQ

How many public holidays does Barcelona have in 2027?

Barcelona has 14: 12 set for all of Catalonia by order EMT/52/2026 (DOGC 1 April 2026) and 2 local holidays set by the Ajuntament, Whit Monday (17 May) and La Mercè (24 September). Three of the 14 fall on a Saturday.

Is Easter Monday a holiday in Barcelona in 2027?

Yes. Easter Monday, 29 March 2027, is a holiday across Catalonia. Holy Thursday is not, so the Easter break is Good Friday to Easter Monday, 26 to 29 March.

Is Sant Esteve (26 December) a holiday in 2027?

26 December 2027 is a Sunday, and it is not on the Catalan list of holidays for 2027, so there is no replacement day. Christmas Day itself falls on a Saturday.

What are the long weekends in Barcelona in 2027?

Without taking leave: 1 to 3 January, 26 to 29 March (Easter), 15 to 17 May (Whit Monday), 24 to 26 September (La Mercè), 30 October to 1 November and 4 to 6 December. With one day of leave you can add 24 to 27 June (Sant Joan), 9 to 12 October and 4 to 8 December.

What are the local holidays in Barcelona in 2027?

Monday 17 May (Segona Pasqua, Whit Monday) and Friday 24 September (La Mercè), set by the Ajuntament de Barcelona. Neighbouring towns such as L'Hospitalet or Badalona set their own.

Is the Diada a day off in 2027?

11 September 2027 is a Saturday. It is still the National Day of Catalonia, but it is not moved, so Monday to Friday workers do not get a replacement day.

Are shops open on public holidays in Barcelona?

Most shops close on public holidays. Small convenience stores, bakeries, bars and restaurants usually open, and in the areas the city treats as tourist zones more shops may open. Shop the day before.
