Before anything else: this guide is general information from fellow expats, not legal or educational advice. Rules, dates and fees change, and every school applies the detail its own way. Confirm the current position with the Consorci d'Educació de Barcelona at edubcn.cat, with the Departament d'Educació's preinscripció site, or with the school itself before you act. We name the source and the year next to every date, figure and rule that is doing real work, and where we could not verify something we say so rather than guess.
Arriving in Barcelona Now, With No School Place: What Happens
If you land in Barcelona after the spring admission round, you do not wait for next March. The 2026-27 school year in Catalonia started on 8 September 2026 and ends on 21 June 2027, according to the Generalitat's official school calendar (Ordre EDF/66/2026). Families who arrive during that time use a separate route that Barcelona calls matrícula viva: a place requested and assigned outside the ordinary preinscripció.
It is not a fringe case. The Consorci d'Educació de Barcelona has written on its own blog that roughly a third of the city's applications for compulsory schooling come in outside the normal period, and that in the year it described, 11.036 pupils were placed that way, 4.477 of them children who had never been to school in Catalonia (Consorci d'Educació, published July 2023, previous-year data).
How the mid-year route works in Barcelona
- Apply with the online form on the Departament d'Educació's preinscripció website. The Consorci's page for the 2026-27 year sends families there. It covers children who have never been at a school in Catalonia and pupils changing school in Barcelona for an accepted reason.
- The Consorci assigns the school from the places still free, weighing family preferences, proximity and the social balance of each school, as the Consorci itself describes it. You can tell it which schools you would like, but a school cannot simply hand you a place.
- Help is by appointment. The Consorci's offices see families by cita prèvia if you are stuck with the form.
- Timing: for 2026-27, requests received by 9 August 2026 were to be placed before term started, as far as possible. Later requests are handled from September onwards.
- Do not sit on the offer. A pupil who does not start at the assigned school within two weeks of the start of term or of the assignment loses the place (Consorci, 2026-27 page).
Moving within the city counts too. For a pupil already in a Barcelona school, the 2026-27 rules accept a mid-year change of school for a move to another district, for gender violence or bullying, or when foster care begins. A move to a flat round the corner, in the same district, is not on that list.
How the School System in Barcelona Is Built
Barcelona follows the same national stages as the rest of Spain, under the Catalan names you will see on every form:
| Stage | Ages | Compulsory? | Cost at a public school |
|---|---|---|---|
| Educació infantil, first cycle (escola bressol, I0 to I2) | 0 to 3 | No | Income-based fee, I2 free (see below) |
| Educació infantil, second cycle (P3, P4, P5) | 3 to 6 | No, but almost universal | Free |
| Primària | 6 to 12 | Yes | Free |
| ESO (secondary) | 12 to 16 | Yes | Free |
| Batxillerat | 16 to 18 | No | Free |
P3 is the entry point that matters. Almost every child in Catalonia starts school in the year they turn three, so the P3 preinscripció is where most families compete for their preferred school, and a primary school place, once you have it, normally carries you to age 12.
There are three kinds of school:
- Pública: run by the Generalitat (in Barcelona, through the Consorci d'Educació). No tuition fees.
- Concertada: privately owned, often religious, and paid for by the public purse under an agreement. They are in the same preinscripció as public schools, with the same points. More on their real costs below.
- Privada: fully private, including the international schools. They run their own admissions and are outside the preinscripció entirely.
Is Nursery Free in Barcelona? The 0 to 3 and 3 to 6 Years
School from age 3 is free; nursery before that is free only in the year your child turns two to three, and only for the school hours. The Generalitat made the I2 year (children aged 2 to 3) free at publicly funded escoles bressol. Its own page dates this to September 2023, while earlier official documents point to the 2022-23 course. Barcelona's municipal price page for 2026-27 confirms that I2 schooling and early drop-off cost nothing, while meals are paid.
For the younger years (I0 and I1), Barcelona's municipal escoles bressol charge a monthly fee set by tarifació social: ten income bands that take household size into account. For 2026-27 the published top fee is 406,85 EUR a month, which the Ajuntament says covers 43 per cent of the cost of a place. Families who do not take part in the income assessment pay the top band, and families without a Spanish tax number can be assessed on a home-country tax return with a sworn translation (Ajuntament de Barcelona, escoles bressol price page, 2026-27).
About the I1 year: the Generalitat announced in late 2024 that the I1 year (children aged 1 to 2) would also become free. Barcelona's 2026-27 municipal price page still mentions only I2 as free, so do not budget on I1 being free until the Ajuntament says so.
Escoles bressol have their own admission round, separate from schools. For 2026-27, Barcelona's municipal round ran with applications from 4 to 15 May 2026, a draw on 29 May, admitted lists on 10 June and enrolment from 11 to 25 June 2026 (edubcn.cat). Children must be at least 16 weeks old at the start of the course. Points for the municipal escoles bressol follow a similar pattern to schools: 50 for a sibling, 30 for a home in the school's area, 15 for a home elsewhere in Barcelona.
Does Where You Live in Barcelona Decide Your School?
Yes, more than in many Spanish cities. Barcelona is divided into 29 school zones, each a neighbourhood or a group of neighbourhoods within one district, and your proximity is measured from your illa de cases, the city block you live on (Consorci d'Educació, 2026-27). For P3 and Primària, the schools that count as close to you include the three nearest public and three nearest concertada schools, every public and concertada school in your zone, and every school within 500 metres, topped up until you have at least six of each type. For ESO, the zone is your whole district, plus the secondaries linked to the primaries that cover your address.
The Consorci's school search by address shows exactly which schools are close to a given address. If you are still choosing a flat, run your shortlisted addresses through it before you sign. Our where to live in Barcelona guide compares the neighbourhoods themselves.
The points, as set for 2026-27
These are the priority points in the Generalitat's preinscripció rules (Resolució EDF/293/2026, published in the DOGC on 10 February 2026). Proximity scores do not stack: only one of the address lines counts.
| Priority criterion | Points |
|---|---|
| Brother or sister already at the school | 50 |
| Home address in the school's zone | 30 |
| A parent's workplace in the school's zone (instead of home, if the parent asks) | 20 |
| Barcelona only: home in the same district as your first-choice school, outside its zone | 15 |
| Home in the same municipality as your first-choice school, outside its zone | 10 |
| A parent receives the renda garantida de ciutadania or the ingrés mínim vital | 15 |
A second set of complementary criteria is used only to break ties between families with the same priority score: 15 points for a recognised disability of 33 per cent or more in the pupil, a parent or a sibling, and 10 points each for a parent working at the school, a large family (família nombrosa), a single-parent family (família monoparental), a multiple birth, foster care, or being a victim of gender violence or terrorism.
Anything still tied after that is settled by a random number. Every application gets one, siblings applying together share one, and a public draw sets the starting point. For 2026-27 that draw took place on 28 April 2026.
What it means for a newcomer: with no sibling in the system, you start 50 points behind any family that has one, and no address can make that up. A popular school in your own zone can still fill entirely with siblings and zone families. List realistic options, including schools with places, and use all your choices.
The padró is how your address is proved
The 2026-27 rules say residence data is obtained electronically from the municipal padró. If the system cannot retrieve it, you attach a volant municipal de convivència from the Ajuntament showing that the child lives with you. So the empadronamiento is the first thing to sort before a preinscripció, not an afterthought.
Address fraud is checked. The admission committees can ask the Ajuntament to verify recent padró registrations for P3 applications, precisely to catch families registered at an address they do not live in. False data cancels the priority points and can cost the place, even after the course has begun. Register where you really live.
If you claim a workplace instead of your home, you prove it with an employment contract or an employer certificate, or with the address on the tax form 036 or 037 if you are self-employed.
School deadlines are the ones that hurt to miss.

When Is the School Preinscripció in Barcelona?
The ordinary round runs in March for P3, Primària and ESO, and in April for Batxillerat. The calendar is set each year by a resolution of the Departament d'Educació published in the DOGC, the Catalan official gazette. In the last two rounds that resolution was published on 10 February (Resolució EDF/319/2025 and Resolució EDF/293/2026).
The 2027-28 calendar had not been published when we checked on 6 October 2026. The preinscripció portal still showed the 2026-27 course. Going by the last two years, expect the resolution in early to mid February 2027 and applications in March 2027, but treat that as a pattern, not a date. Here is last year's round, the 2026-27 preinscripció, now closed, as published on preinscripcio.gencat.cat:
| Step, P3 and Primària (2026-27, last year's round) | Date |
|---|---|
| Initial offer of places published | 3 March 2026 |
| Applications | 4 to 18 March 2026, from 09:00 |
| Supporting documents | until 19 March 2026 |
| Provisional points list | 15 April 2026 |
| Appeals (reclamacions) | 15 to 20 April 2026 |
| Tie-break draw | 28 April 2026, 11:00 |
| Ordered list | 29 April 2026 |
| Widening your choices if unplaced | 1 to 3 June 2026 |
| Admitted pupils and waiting list | 10 June 2026 |
| Enrolment (matrícula) | 22 to 30 June 2026 |
For ESO the 2026-27 dates were the same except that applications ran from 6 to 18 March 2026. For Batxillerat, applications ran from 9 to 16 April 2026, the draw was on 26 May, admitted lists came out on 17 June and enrolment ran from 18 to 30 June 2026. The 2026-27 rules do not accept late Batxillerat applications in the ordinary round.
Two practical points. You apply once, listing schools in order of preference, and the district and municipality proximity scores are worked out against your first-choice school, so think hard about which school goes first. And for Primària and ESO, schools formally linked to each other (adscrits) give their own pupils priority before points are counted, which is why moving up from a linked primary to its secondary is usually smooth.
Will My Child Be Taught in Catalan in Barcelona?
In public and concertada schools, Catalan is the main language of teaching. Catalonia's education law of 2009 (Llei 12/2009) makes Catalan the normal vehicular language, and a 2024 decree (Decret 91/2024) also made it the language used to welcome newly arrived pupils. Spanish (castellà) is a compulsory subject throughout, and English is taught as a foreign language. Pupils are expected to finish compulsory schooling able to use both Catalan and Spanish.
The share of teaching in Spanish has been argued in the courts for years, and we state the position as neutrally as we can. In December 2020 the Catalan high court (TSJC) ordered that at least 25 per cent of teaching be in Spanish, a ruling that became final in 2021. In 2022 the Catalan government and parliament replied with a decree-law and a law (Decret llei 6/2022 and Llei 8/2022) that removed fixed percentages and left the balance to each school's language project. The TSJC referred both to the Constitutional Court, which admitted the question in October 2022, and as far as we could verify it had not ruled by the time of writing. Separately, the TSJC partly annulled Decret 91/2024 in September 2025, a ruling the Catalan government said it would appeal. If the language mix matters to you, ask each school for its projecte lingüístic, which sets out how it uses each language.
Arriving with no Catalan or Spanish
Many Barcelona schools have an aula d'acollida, a welcome class for newly arrived pupils that gives intensive Catalan support for part of the timetable while the child spends the rest of the day with their own class. Ask the school how its welcome support works and for how long.
Private and international schools are outside these language rules and set their own language of teaching, which is a large part of why many foreign families consider them. If you want your own Spanish to keep up with your children's, our learn Spanish in Barcelona guide covers the options.
Is a Concertada School Free in Barcelona?
Legally the teaching is free, but in practice most Catalan concertadas ask for a monthly fee. Article 88 of Spain's education law (LOE) says public and concertada schools may not charge families for teaching that is free, may not require contributions to foundations or associations, and may not make paid services compulsory. Lunch, extracurricular activities and services must be voluntary.
The most-cited data comes from CICAE, the association of private schools, which sends mystery shoppers to concertadas each year. In its tenth study, covering the 2025-26 school year and reported by eldiario.es on 1 October 2025, every Catalan concertada in the sample asked for a fee, the average was about 220 EUR a month, and the highest recorded was 1.100 EUR. CICAE competes with concertadas for families, so read its figures as one side's evidence, and ask each school for its fees in writing. For the free stages, a fee is legally a request, not a bill.
How Much Do International Schools in Barcelona Cost?
From about 6.500 EUR to over 27.000 EUR a year in tuition, before one-off entry fees. The national-curriculum foreign schools (German, French) sit at the lower end; the American and British schools at the higher end. Every figure below is the school's own, for the year the school attaches to it, at the individual-family rate. We list schools that publish their fees, in no order of preference; leaving a school out says nothing about its quality.
| School | Curriculum | Published annual tuition | Year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deutsche Schule Barcelona (Esplugues) | German | 6.570 to 6.600 EUR | 2026/27 |
| Lycée Français de Barcelone | French | 6.929 to 8.104 EUR | 2026-2027 |
| Benjamin Franklin International School | American | 12.950 to 21.720 EUR | 2026-2027 |
| The British School of Barcelona, city campuses | British | 13.190 to 20.930 EUR, lunch and books included | 2026-2027 |
| American School of Barcelona (Esplugues) | American | 14.114 to 27.062 EUR (half-day PK3 9.404 EUR) | 2026-27 |
The one-off costs are where budgets go wrong. From the same published pages: Deutsche Schule asks an entry donation of at least 2.500 to 3.000 EUR; the Lycée charges 1.500 EUR on first registration plus lunch; Benjamin Franklin charges a 6.000 EUR entrance fee and 1.100 EUR matriculation; the British School of Barcelona charges a 3.400 EUR one-off matriculation, and its campuses outside the city (Castelldefels, Sitges, Maresme) publish lower fees than the city ones; the American School of Barcelona charges a capital levy of 3.000 or 6.000 EUR plus 975 EUR matriculation a year.
Several well-known schools, including Oak House School, St Peter's and Kensington School, did not publish a full 2026-27 tuition list we could verify, so we are not quoting figures for them. Ask them directly.
Do We Need to Homologate a Foreign School Record?
Not to start school in the compulsory stages. The Consorci d'Educació de Barcelona states that pupils from foreign education systems joining Primària or ESO do not need homologation and are placed by age. Homologation matters for Batxillerat entry and for the final qualifications. For Batxillerat, the 2026-27 rules accept a conditional enrolment slip while the homologation is being processed, with a provisional grade of 5 used for admission.
The official procedures are on the Ministerio de Educación's homologation page and the Generalitat's homologation procedure. Fees and documents depend on the level and the country, so we only point you there.

Schools in Barcelona: FAQ
We have just arrived in Barcelona and the preinscripció is over. How do we get a school place?
Use the matrícula viva route. You request a place with the online form on the Departament d'Educació's preinscripció website, and the Consorci d'Educació de Barcelona assigns a school with free places. Its offices help families by appointment. For 2026-27, requests received by 9 August 2026 were to be placed before term where possible, and a pupil who does not start within two weeks of the assignment loses the place.
Does where we live in Barcelona affect which school we get?
Yes. Barcelona is divided into 29 school zones, and proximity is measured from your city block. A home inside the school's zone scores 30 points, a home in the same district but outside the zone scores 15, and a home elsewhere in the city scores 10. Siblings already at the school score 50. You can check which schools count as close to your address on the Consorci d'Educació's school search at edubcn.cat.
Do I need to be on the padró to apply for a school in Barcelona?
In practice, yes. The 2026-27 admission rules say residence data is obtained electronically from the municipal padró. If it cannot be retrieved, you attach a volant de convivència from the Ajuntament. Recent padró registrations for P3 can be checked for fraud, and false address data cancels the priority and can cost the place.
When is the school preinscripció in Barcelona?
In March. For 2026-27, applications for P3, Primària and ESO ran in March 2026 (4 to 18 March for P3 and Primària, 6 to 18 March for ESO), Batxillerat ran from 9 to 16 April, and enrolment ran from 22 to 30 June 2026. The rules for the next round are set by a Departament d'Educació resolution published in the DOGC, which came out on 10 February in both 2025 and 2026. The 2027-28 dates had not been published when this guide was written.
Will my child be taught in Catalan in Barcelona?
In public and concertada schools, Catalan is the main language of teaching and the language used to welcome newly arrived pupils, with Spanish and English taught as subjects. How much teaching must be in Spanish has been argued in the courts since a 2020 ruling, and parts of that dispute were still pending when this guide was written. Newly arrived pupils can get support in an aula d'acollida. International schools set their own language of teaching.
Is nursery (escola bressol) free in Barcelona?
Partly. The year for two-year-olds (I2) is free at public escoles bressol for the school hours, with meals paid separately. For the other years, Barcelona's municipal escoles bressol charge by income band under a social tariff; for 2026-27 the top monthly fee is 406,85 EUR. School from age 3 (P3 to P5) is free at public schools.
Is a concertada school free?
By law the teaching is free. The state education law forbids public and concertada schools from charging for free teaching or making contributions compulsory. In practice most concertadas ask for a monthly fee. CICAE, the private schools association, reported an average of about 220 EUR a month across the Catalan concertadas in its 2025-26 mystery-shopper sample.
How much do international schools in Barcelona cost?
From about 6.500 EUR a year to over 27.000 EUR a year, before one-off entry fees. Among the schools that publish 2026-27 fees, Deutsche Schule Barcelona lists about 6.570 to 6.600 EUR a year and the Lycée Français de Barcelone 6.929 to 8.104 EUR, while the American School of Barcelona lists 14.114 to 27.062 EUR for full-day places. Many also charge one-off entry or capital fees of several thousand euros.
Do we need to homologate our child's foreign school record?
Not for the compulsory stages. The Consorci d'Educació de Barcelona states that pupils from foreign education systems joining Primària or ESO do not need homologation and are placed by age. It matters for Batxillerat and for the final ESO certificate. The official procedure is on the Ministerio de Educacion and Generalitat websites.
